Want to fit in with the locals of Emmerdale Village? Don’t turn away, here’s some lingo today!

Drama and Music

Through watching ‘Emmerdale’ clips for over six hours, (sad as that is) I’ve come to learn that there are various ways of saying things around the village. After all, you have to spruce up your language if you want to shop at David’s, have a coffee at Bob and Brenda’s, or enjoy a lazy afternoon at The Woolpack.

Of course there are your usual greetings of saying hello and goodbye etc, but every so often, a couple of phrases made me go “Excuse me?” or “I really like that.” Most of these are surrounding situations that have become confrontational, but if you are going to pay the village a visit, you’ll have to get used to a lot of those…..

Without further ado, here are the top phrases used:

  1. “Do one” – Get lost
  2. “Quit peckin’ me ‘ead!” – Stop going on at me (This is a personal favourite of mine)
  3. “Flamin ‘ec!” – What the hell?
  4. “…. get done” – Get in trouble
  5. “Dodgy ticker” – Bad heart
  6. “Run-ins.” – Conflict with others
  7. “…..get rid.” Means what it says. Get rid of someone (forget about them)
  8. “Don’t be soft.” – Don’t be a wet blanket
  9. “Doing a runner.” – Running away from trouble literally
  10. “In the buff.” – Naked
  11. “Take their blinkers off.” – Look at what’s happening, don’t hide your head in the clouds
  12. “We ‘ad a niggle.” – Had an idea
  13. “Saved your bacon” – Like, ‘saved your hide.’
  14. “Bumped off.” – Killed
